MEDIA CENTER GUIDELINES/POLICIES

1. Books may be checked out for 7 days.  Special collection books may have different loan periods.

3. Students are responsible for the books they borrow from the media center.

4. Students may renew a book once for an additional week, if needed, provided others are not waiting on the same book.

PROPER USE OF A BOOK STICK

Book Sticks are used while looking for a book on the shelves to mark the place where a book is removed from the shelf.  This allows the student to put the book back on the shelf where the book belongs if the student is not interested in the book.  It is important that the student stay with the book stick while looking for books to keep up with the book stick the student is using.  Book sticks should be returned to the box when finished.  Students may never put books back on the shelf unless a book stick is used.

Book sticks should never be used as a weapon or to make noise.  Inappropriate use of a book stick may result in a discipline slip.

CHECK OUT PROCEDURES

1. Return any previously checked out books to the book drop.

2. Get a book stick from the box.

3. Look on the shelves for a book using the book stick while looking.

4. When a book is found, remove the book stick from the shelf.

5. Put the book stick back in the box.

6. Check the book out at the circulation desk.  You will need your media center card and the book.

PROPER CARE FOR LIBRARY BOOKS

1. Clean your hands before reading the book.

2. Do not eat or drink while reading the book

3. Never write, scribble, glue, or cut the pages of a book.

4. Save your place with a bookmark, not by folding a page.

5. Turn pages carefully using the top corner of the page.

6. Carry your book in a book bag to keep it safe.

7. Keep your book away from water.

8. Put your book in a safe place.

DAMAGED LIBRARY BOOKS

If a library book becomes damaged, please do not try to repair it yourself.  The media specialist and media clerk are trained in book repair techniques that can restore the book to near new condition.  The media staff uses special glues, tapes, and other materials to repair library books.  These special glues, tapes, and other materials do not contain chemicals that will not cause further damage to the book.  Using household materials to repair books contain acids that will cause further damage to the book over time.

It is best to paper clip the damaged page to the other pages in the book and return the book to the media center to be professionally repaired by the media staff.  Always hand the book to one of the media staff so we know the book is damaged.
